Clutching her Teddy Bear,
"He's too scared to leave my side
Teddy says he needs me
He says he is all mine!"
No one listens to the little girl
Since she is only four
Experienced in a life of pain
Every new place is like the one before
At a far too young age
The mere age of two
Her parents were murdered
What was she to do?
Her Teddy had been with her
And smelled of her father's love
Holding her mommy's care
The little girl's only connection above
Being pushed into people's lives
They found her to be too much
Intimidated by the sight of her tears
Frightened by her needy touch
They sent her on
As quick as she came
She'd done nothing wrong
Yet received all the blame
In her fifteenth home
Of the past two years
They were attempting to take Teddy
Despite her pleading tears
Behind the sobs
Of this young girl's cries
"He needs me!" she shrieked
Holding him tight
"Don't cry Sally,
We're going to wash your bear,
He's too dirty and gross,
This will show him we care."
Sally's father figure
Tried to convince her of this
"Soon he'll be good as new
Ready for a hug and a kiss."
Sally's eyes grew extra wide
Not believing what she was told
Through the past two year's she had grown wise
More couragous and much more bold
She needed to remember
Her mother and father's smell
So she would still know
Things used to be so well
Boldly she stood up
Hugging Teddy to her chest
Facing Sue and Phill
She finally confessed
"Teddy will not be
Cleaned up quick and fast,
For nothing can ever be made new,
And it's impossible to erase a past."
Sue and Phill's jaws dropped
At the shock of what she had said
How can a four-year-old
Have such complex thoughts in her head?
Yet Sally taught them a lesson
And this with you I will share
No one's past can be erased
But futures can be laid out with care

Brilliant poem and insight into these children. All children need something to put their fears, love, hopes, wishes, dreams into that is theirs and their alone and will never reveal all the secrets. Teddies are perfect for this. Beautiful caring work.

wow - i felt so sad for the little girl i almost cried - its so sad that there are children in this exact situation. But I liked that it was so hopeful at the end 'futures can be laid out with care'. Stunningly written. Well done.
