Come Live With Me

Contributed by JJMcBride on Saturday, 9th July 2005 @ 09:28:37 PM in AEST
Topic: DreamsandWishes

Come live with me

I am here to clean your office
Empty the garbage
Keep the carpet clean
Vacuum around your polished executive business shoes

In your dignified two thousand dollar suit and tie
Your remote and serious face
Your elite voice and hundred dollar haircut
Your life so far from mine

Come live with me

I will show you how
First, I will take off your shinier than a mirror
Fancy Italian shoes
And then your silk business socks

Your bare feet
Smooth and pale and pampered
White Collar feet
But not for long....

Come live with me

As I drop your fancy shoes and socks
In my garbage bag
And take your manicured hand
To lead you, barefoot, out of your office

Forget the computer and your briefcase
And the cell phone
And the MBA
And the office

Come live with me

Here, take the service elevator
For the very first time
Here is my beat-up 1989 Ford
Just relax

We will take the exit
Into my blue-collar neighborhood
There is my trailer
Now step right out

Come live with me

Settle down on my dirty sofa
Put your bare feet up
On my formica table with the crack
I will dismantle the upper-crust you

I take off your monogrammed gold cufflinks
Your wrist watch and your tie pin
Here - let me get that nice silk necktie off you
Now we will take off your high-and-mighty business suit

Come live with me

No more blue pinstriped business suits or ties for you
No more starched white shirts or designer underwear
Here are some overalls and a
Dirty t-shirt

Put them on
Get used to it
Keep the cufflinks
Only to scratch the soles of your feet

Come live with me

Tomorrow quit your job
Give away your stocks and condo
What is this in your suit?
Keys to your Porsche

No - you won't need them
Shoes? No. Just some plastic flip-flops
When you start work
Washing dishes at the diner down the street

Come live with me

I will cut up your tailored suit and shirt and tie
To make rags
Here - clean the kitchen with them
While I am work

Here is a beer
NASCAR is on
You won't need to shave
Grow a beard and grow your hair

Come live with me

You will get used to it
I will train you to speak
A new language
Far from your office and your Ivy League diploma and your impeccable grooming

Six months from now
Belching and sweating as you wash the dishes in the diner
You scratch your beard
Those Italian leather dress shoes just a memory

I tried to read this from both sides of the equation but I found that your obvious opinion on this topic is biased.

You write very well and have obvious talent.

But, instead of finding fault in someone because of the brand of clothing they wear or education why not step up and think of ways to accomplish the goals that you want for yourself?

I am perplexed and pondering this one...

I have to agree with Kie. The person talking could have had the same if they had worked hard enough for it. It take guts, hard work and setting tough goals but anyone can do it if they want it bad enough. I agree this is an extremly biased and bigoted piece of work. I also agree that you do have talent.

Well... I can't agree with the other comments on this one. Everyone is, of course!, entitled to their opinion, I'm just saying I have a very different one this time 'round.

I like this piece. Frankly, I don't have an MBA, expensive suites or italian leather shoes... but I do fit into that "executive" category and I, personally, do not find this at all offensive. There is nothing in it that I believe demeans the person themself or could be construed as a blatent attack on their personal character. It is, though, well crafted, wonderfully detailed, certainly interesting and gosh... just... honest. Sure, it's a bit targeted... but, it seems to me, it needed to be or something would be lost. Honestly, it doesn't paint a rosy picture of either blue or white collar... and perhaps that is as it should be - after all, no one is without some flaws and pretending we are is just silly (which... may well have been your point).

As I said - I like this piece. And I do hope you post more.
