fool's gold

Grief
|
nice, pleasant, words fade in the wind,
yes, that is what he was, a quiet man
still there is the why
a tragedy unfolded last night as we slept
seems too unreal for it to have happened
now the world is less
those beautiful smiles decorate the mantle
as the photographer flashes on the scene
just another job
purposeful feet tread as if on hallowed soil
gingerly avoiding that dreadful aftermath
must not disturb
covered gurney follows another outside
the waiting van swallows them whole
somber and silent
inside work continues matter of factly
events imagined and reconstructed
are they really
science plies its artful results completely
and the task is supposedly finished
we're done here
just can't believe they're all gone
the smiles that passed that morning
they were babies
the wife's terror woke her salvation
failing twice at his horrifc tasks
suicide survivor
the house is empty and quiet now
memory remains to describe the sad
why also remains
