Taking Life by the Reigns

I have decided to take life by the reigns
Because the horses have strayed for too long
But then again, I’ve never taken my own advice
Laying back like an embarrassed child, I simply say and do the right things
Somehow after you, right seems wrong and impulsive infallible
Quarter life gone and nothing to show
I fall upwards towards a sky not ready to collect
With beliefs not my own but of those before me
My morality is their heirloom
Like an intangible hand-me-down
It is time for me to move from their shadow
And I will start with you, my first independent act
The old trees have been burnt to make room for the new
Will you take me as such?
This is the first time I can offer all that I am
And I hope that it will be the last
My horses, led too long by others are given now to me
And they arrive in good hands
