Witness
by glb/ghostbear
1/07/03
I climb back in,
Rain reflectons cast a full moon's
Glow across flooded fields
Filtered deep into flat black night
Against the heart of December's
Darkness.
I climb back in,
Atop flat farm fields
Overwhelmed by
December's thaw.
Beneath indigo skies
Windblown bulging, thunder clouds
Carry drenching rain storms
Out of Southwestern plains,
Pouring their way across
Wisconsin farmlands.
I climb back in,
Full moon rises
Above flooded fields,
Beneath black clouds,
Suspended,
Night's witness hangs
Between frozen past,
And t hese flooded times.
You can feel them,
In the wind against your face.
You can smell them in crisp air.
You can sense their signature,
Memories all their own,
Scrawled across the back
Walls of your mind.
I climb back in,
Night wind and rainstorm
Promise once again,
Snow's but a myth
Upon the wind.
Canadians have extended
Their stay,
All night they scramble
In hurried furious, squawking clans,
From field to river and back again.
Sandhills trumpet their goodbyes,
Ghosts from high skies,
Telling us their moving on,
But there's uncertainty in their echoes.
Flocks of Mallards, Greenbacks
And all related kin,
Wait upon the river,
Fly out into the moon,
Then return again.
All of us,
Who bear imprint to journey,
To Travel on,
Witness times between ice and thaw,
Waiting, waiting, waiting
For Winter's call.
Uneasy we remain,
Waiting for snow to fall.
All in all,
We know Winter's not to be trusted
These days.
I climb back in,
More than in time,
Off the road,
Across the tracks where trains
And barges keep constant
Story.
All night long,
They travel southbound.
Back in,
Where the river wash
Becomes a hidden sanctuary
Of tormented oaks,
Twisted Elms and Disarmed
Box Elder, all scarred by
Rivers rage.
Back in,
Where river's inlets and coves
Remind us,
Nothing is safe from flooded crimes.
Yet everything with roots in time
Remains the same.
I climb back in,
Amongst all of these stories,
Trying to begin,
Trying to find,
Secrets of open water
In Ice times,
Where Eagles nest and guard
Their sacred fishing grounds,
Where muskrats build
Hibernation mounds,
Where Lynx prowl,
And lonely Coyotes
Find thin fingers out into
The river's midst to howl.
We all bear witness to
bended river ways,
To Trails followed,
Tales unwound,
Open water bays,
And years when we learned
To be unafraid.
I climb back in,
Witness to where the river
Names and claims
All who have dared
Bear sin against it.
Here, no matter how sure
You or I are of the moon's phase,
If we've learned
Anything at all about river ways,
Heart to heart.
We know for sure,
Winter's not to be trusted
These days.
