The Joy I Know Will Be
This thought-rock wide from ear to ear
from back of head to front of face-
this worry pleading, begging word,
my brain sore for need of space.
A thought I think of as a stone
weighing on my neck and back-
it grows, it swells till quelled by sleep,
but with dawn's caress it's back.
A drinking man all my life
I ringed a mate the same for ease-
but now we travel to a sober land
not sure of who'll we be.
Will she like the sober Mike
will her enchanting spell on me still hold-
Our unwavering love forever strong
must greet the new and shed the old.
A stranger's coming home next week
the stumbling wreck that left in tears-
we've had a month to change from drunks,
and won't use booze to drink away our fears.
This nagging itch that she won't care
for this new man, this boozeless me-
but it's a trifling thing that'll fade I pray
in the sober joy I know will be.
