Lovely: Ode to Morning Company
"And parted the shirt from my bosom-bone, and plunged your tongue to my barestript heart..."
-Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass" 1855
Greeted in the morning tenderly,
By her sober hand and warm embrace;
To her whispers of equal touch, I listen,
These prophecies of a sphere-shaped deity goddess bright
She this embodiment and personified warmth of sun,
Her elder sister, the apple not far from the grove, wheresoever it might be in the end of day
I love this gift of passionate presence in the present
future, and future pasts, and future presents
So I give her the title, this thief who stole my compounded fist of passion;
She shall be named "Lovely", for to be loved, she will be by way of love, be given to quite lovingly
Welcome morning! Welcome sun! Welcome evening, night and moon!
For when night brings arrival, the sun doesn't die, or hide, but sleeps in my mind and heart;
While during the day the moon does something quite akin,
Frolicking in the trees and wood, along the side of the dancing stars
