Yahrzeit
Yahrzeit
A solitary candle flickers and breathes
pulsating with light of remembrance.
Surrounding it, the dark room encounters
And befriends the silence of the watching walls
Caressed by the pictures, carvings, natural stones.
A faint smell of furniture, tang of polish
Muzzles under a warming tongue.
The small light beats wings against the glass
Until its energy spends one single day,
A life that weeps upon a waxen floor,
A memory burned into the atmosphere.
Reminder of the small soft warm woman
Who closed with resignation her pained brown eyes,
Now fourteen years ago, and who relives her
Short span enduring in the lonely flame.
Timid flame, tender light, trembling spark
So soon forsaken, folding in the dark,
Consumes us still with immemorial grief.
