Symbols Of The Past
Symbols Of The Past
I was driving in the country,
When I stopped to take a break.
My need was not that urgent,
But I stopped for my dog's sake.
When I pulled into a driveway,
That I saw would meet out needs.
With a long abandoned home site,
Overgrown by tumbleweeds.
I could see a stone foundation,
Where a house once used to be.
With just a broken down old shed,
Standing back beneath a tree.
Some bushes had been planted there,
Like a lilac and a rose.
But other plants don't stand much chance,
Where the caragania grows.
With maple trees so mighty tall,
I knew without a doubt.
A lot of years had drifted by,
Since those trees began to sprout.
As I wondered round that home site,
Not knowing what I'd find.
I began to get a picture,
Of the past there in my mind.
I thought I saw a stately house,
Which had stood there long before.
With a team and wagon waiting,
For the family at the door.
Where a garden patch was growing,
Just a little ways away.
With a swing and tee tee totter,
Where children used to play.
A windmill with a water trough,
With a chicken coop and then,
A barn with lots of fence around,
And some piggies in a pen.
I wondered why they moved away,
From the dream that they once had.
With so many years invested,
It just seemed so very sad.
But times were hard back in those days,
With labor so intense.
Mixed farming was the only thing,
Which spoke of common sense.
Yet in the years which lay ahead,
Everything began to change.
That way of life could not exist,
which today would seem quite strange.
With the tractor and the auto,
Electricity and more.
There is no need to grow your own,
Just go buy it at the store.
If you just produce one item,
Then you turn it into cash.
The labor costs are cut in half,
So your income does not crash.
With money in this day and age,
You can purchase all you need.
With labor saving new device,
That will help you plant your seed.
The small mixed farm is swept away,
With so little left to show.
How a family had once lived there,
In those days of long ago.
