THE APPLE ORCHARD
i will find myself in the apple orchard soon
an enchanted forest of childhood memories
i was Davy Crockett when i wasn't Daniel Boone
defending my fort against plastic enemies
i will sit on the bench that my grandfather made
a good spot for a son and a dad
at the edge of the orchard, under plenty of shade
to recollect the talks that dad and i had
many times i have lost myself under the fruitful trees
as if entranced in embedded thought
unaware of any sound, or the incoming breeze
just reliving those battles that a child once fought
shadows will come and go in sync with time
until the sun sets at the end of each day
too old now for forts, or a little tree climb
i will watch from the bench as my grandchildren play
the apple orchard is now for them to grow in
i hope they will treat it well
there will come a day when i won't see it again
when the orchard stories will be theirs to tell...
