What's Eating Me
Every now and then
now more often than then,
that hot bitter regret
like the strongest, most potent spirits
from yesterday
are guzzled down my throat
filling up my insides
gnawing like a rabid dog
then burning, searing
hot
like an oven of guilt
as painful as the first time
i touched a heated one
a charred mess
was inside
as i stupidly poured
the liquor of regret
unto a tray of burnt bread
beyond toast
not just singed
but succumbed
to acrid smoke
that billows out
suffocating
choking
making me regurgitate
the unforgiving bile
of only the most tragic memories
again and again.
