Late Night Guitar
Calloused fingers yearn to play;
Again the memories, cast in grey.
Sing to the couch;
Strum for the chair;
Chord for the lover
that isn’t there.
Softly the strings render and part;
Calling on yesterdays deep in her heart.
Speak of the tender wishful decline;
Bittersweet woman; girl of mine .
Lyrics pressed in music books,
Whispering words she knew:
In yellow faded margins;
Songs for one – or two.
Hear the songs she chooses;
How a new love tries;
In the words she looks away
From all the sad good-byes.
The melodies are healing;
They call her soul away;
Music is her lover;
The one who always stays.
Wine to warm an icy soul;
and memories of rock and roll.
Search the night for feelings gone;
Dear guitar, my only one.
