Winter's Lament
The White Lady is approaching, cold, arrogant and disdainful
Flicking her coat tails across the helpless landscape
Numbing breath ices the air, sedates the still beating Autumn heart
She whispers to the North Wind, commands him to her bidding
His compliant form tempered between daggered fingers
Then thrust to earth a spinning ball of vengeant fury.
Nature chokes, strangled in the grip of the serpent
Once bright canvas misted over by white cladding
Uniformity pervades, disinfecting colour and life.
The boisterous child of Spring hides behind the shutters
Cowers in the low light waiting for tomorrow.
For the long nights we are tombed, slaves in her presence
Captives to her decadence and nonchalant disregard
Sweet birdsong stolen, nothing decks the ragged trees.
The ballad of Summer has long since passed
Now the sound in our ears echo's Winter's lament
