in case of fire
“in case of fire”, the words begin
as the sun sets down and you’re settling in
next to someone who’s trying to stoke a spark
near the kindling, in the dark corners of your soul
and it starts like a coal that keeps you warm through the nights
you contain it and hold it tight.
you use it to guide you while you’re lost in the woods
and it shows and you glow as you light embers in the your wake
as if every step you take would ignite a sun given the chance,
and the thought of them is just like a slow dance to your favorite song.
but before long you let this flame out of sight
and try as you might to keep yourself safe, the inevitable inferno
eats and eats and eats and burns.
and you’re wary of what kind of disaster is in store,
the scary things are the words that come more and more
you shudder to think what you would actually feel,
if something real came to fill as you agree to this quest.
but caution always seemed best.
to avoid feeling spurned and to not pursue
you feel safer cold, than burned.
and so it goes, back to the start:
“in case of fire: break heart”
