Editing Instructions

Please note in the NOTES textbox below that this poem has been edited, do not put your name, please put as the following:
<!--EDITED by moderators on (Date) for (reasons).-->
DO NOT remove the line break ( <br /> ) html coding at the end of each line break, these are needed to form the correct lines.
THE CHEATIf you do not wish to delete a poem, or a certain part of a poem, and instead would like to send the url to Mick via PM for confirmation, enclose the entire poem (or part/s thereof) between <!--    and     --> (ie. <!--    POEM TEXT HERE     -->). This will still save the text, but will make it invisible from viewing (other than page source view). You could also add before the <!-- something to the effect of "This Poem under review".

Veterans Are Valid

Not sure where to start
but I will give it my best
I have been thinking about people’s thoughts
I just can’t give it a rest

I find myself in much confusion
about how civilians see Veterans today
I find some peoples words disgusting
when they speak, thinking they know about what they say

It seems everyone went to law school
and knows what for our country is right
They even know that our soldiers serve
but it isn’t freedom for what they fight

All Soldiers are given orders
our government tells them what to do
All have volunteered for direction or a career
but realize the sacrifices to be made too

In the hearts and minds
of all service men and woman today
They serve proudly
and wouldn’t have it any other way

Without our military
our country would be weak and fall
There would be no more freedom
this is something someday you will recall

Even though our government is changing
many bad apples are politicians full of greed
The changes are for the worst
it won’t be long before we start to bleed

They want to cut the Veterans pay
without batting an eye to cutting their very own
How could we elect people of such ignorance
every day they allow it to be shown

If you have never served
you will never know what the day of a soldier will ever be
The discipline, camaraderie, and hard training
such long hours in extreme weather conditions you’ll never see

A soldier’s job
is no ordinary job you see
There is no hesitation or calling in sick
it’s just the way it has to be

When a soldier goes off to war
they don’t know if they are coming back
Leaving family, husbands, wives, and children behind
off they go with a weapon and a rucksack

Some come home and some are killed
losing a comrade is always hard to take
Just know the ones that do come home
deal with many feelings that are not fake

Veterans do struggle
civilian life will never again be the same
Living a life again
becomes a very hard game

Many emotions built up inside
some vets stay cold and don’t allow it to show
Other vets break down
everything gets so overwhelming, you need to know

Many vets are now amputees
they deal with problems such as PTSD
Many can’t handle life after war
suicide is a way out that they see

Our own government is failing us
making promises, then taking them back
However it was okay to make a promise
then send us to places like Afghanistan or Iraq

So yes
American Soldiers do what they are told
They do fight for American freedom
they make sacrifices that are bold

I too am a veteran
many mixed emotions inside of me
Taking all the drugs and shots they give
having a lifelong effect is what I now see

I am not the same
I only hope I can continue to make it through each day
Because sometimes I am at a point
where I say there has got to be a better way

Pain is a constant
it’s the only thing I seem to know or feel
My memory has been stolen
anxiety overtakes me, making me think the moment is real

Sometimes I am a very angry person
these feelings often come and go
Sometimes I just have to get away
and what I feel, I just don’t want you to know

That’s about all I have to say
I hope some people get a clue
From this Veteran to all the others
Thank you for your service proud and true
