Night Beasts
As soon as I begin my nightly slumber
Words bombard as the beast does speak
Thoughts swirl as they increase in number
Crushing my soul and making me weak
Ignore and pretend, over and over I repeat
I feel the rumbling of the beast underneath
When the sounds fade, I sink back in defeat
Only to discover the beast has me in its teeth
It's the war I fight night after lonely night
Night beasts use inner terrors to destroy
Sleep's meant to give end to each day's fright
To the beast, this is the time of its greatest joy
There's no end to the dark the beast brings
It attacks from side to side, front to rear
It has a most alluring song it nightly sings
Devouring victims within their own fear
No avenue of escape or a reasoning why
At least not in the confines of deepest night
Beasts try to hide freedom from one's eye
Effectively quenching any thirst to fight
Think happy thoughts cries my broken heart
Remember joyful promises you've been shown
Brave souls believe that love will surely outsmart
The blackest garden the beast thinks it's grown
